Since old times, the monasteries were famous for their handwork. The sewing is one of the traditional monastic occupations. It’s also known that The Virgin Mary was a very skilled handworker.
Except the preparation of church garments, the monastic manufactory includes army uniforms and army textile accessories and parade dresses for ladies. The monasteries produced embroideries, lacework items, sewed jewels, golden and silver garments, weaver pieces. Monastic manufactories worked as well for foreign demands.
During the First World War, the sisters of the Nunnery of Saint Nicholas of Solba sewed clothes for the army needs.
In our monastery from the first days there was sewing manufactory. At the present, we are producing clothes and monastic uniforms for sisters, clothes for the teachers from the orphanage, costumes for children shows and so on.
You can obtain items from our sewing manufactory from the monastic shops: skirts, aprons, wrappers, cooking clothes, decorative bags and rucksacks, belts and bookmarks for religious books.
The offer is not very varied for the moment, but we plan to open a big sewing manufactory, in order to be able to satisfy big demands. Except sewing chuch garments, we plan to perfect women clothes production. This articles are very actual at the moment, as the modern models are in fact not very suited for the dressing requirements demanded by God’s commandments.
We plan the opening of golden sewing manufactory in our monastery as well.
Finally, we are in great need of working volunteers: sewers, cutters, modelers and so on. We ‘d be very glad if sisters possessing this kind of vocations. We had many interesting and varied tasks to be accomplished in the daily obedience which permit to value in God the proper talents and gifts.
The ceramic is known from ancient times and perhaps is the first material made by man. However in time the quality of the material and the and the shapes of the parts was perfected and at the end the ceramic is the object of art.
This very work of mosaic reminds us of something very beautiful. In the 18th century BC. the first techniques of the mosaic appeared. The colorful mosaics of high quality were during the age of the of the Byzantine Empire. The first leader of the contemporary mosaic material is the smalt, a traditional one that helps to realize any shape.
The ginger bread bakery
The ginger breads made by nuns sisters and girls from the monastery are quite alike artistically objects than for the appetite for the tea and they are quite apart. The cookies are made with honey and of course with ginger that gives them apart flavor. Thanks to therapeutically qualities they were very popular. They are the innovation of English monks that gave the shape of the cross to cookies, the figures of saints, of the angels. In the middle age in England was considered that these cookies have medicinal powers.
The preparation of the soap
The sister of the monastery make soap exclusivity by handicraft, they use extracts from plants and different oils. This soap is made in the monastery with the help of the prayer and it would be an excellent gift for relatives, friends, acquaintances. The first testimony about the preparation of the soap was made in Babylon in 2500 before Christ. Judging by these testimonies the soap was made using a mélange of water and extracts from trees and plants that boiled together and the liquid resulted was the soap.
